Bieber Fever

George Sporting the Bieber 'Do

Yes, you read that title correctly. I’ve got it. I never expected to catch it. In fact, I think I’ve been inoculated against it. But nevertheless, it’s made its way into my bloodstream.

I have Bieber Fever.

Yesterday, Mary Claire and I went to see the JB movie. The boys opted for “The Green Hornet,” and I have to admit I was a little bummed I chose the perceived short straw.

“I’m NOT going to see Justin Bieber,” Chris declared. And that was that. A girls’ day out was born.

While we were waiting for the movie to begin, Mary Claire leaned over to me and whispered, “I can’t wait until I’m sixteen so I can go to the movies with all my friends.” Apparently, I was not her idea of the perfect date. Whatever.

When the lights dimmed, I could feel the excitement emanating from my 10-year-old. She’s a hard-core, unapologetic Bieber fan. She couldn’t wait for this movie experience.

“It’s in 3D,” I told her before we left. “Will you be able to control yourself if he actually comes out of the screen and into your lap?”

(Insert dramatic eye roll.)

I must explain that I’m not normally a fan of Bieber-ish music. Although my tastes are eclectic, they lean more toward the Indigo Girls/Brandi Carlile/Avett Brothers side of the spectrum.

But I must now admit that a 17-year-old pop star stole my heart yesterday. (And not in that inappropriate, Dave Matthews-like way.)

Here’s the thing… he’s the kind of kid I like. He’s enthusiastic, down-to-earth, driven, and talented. I’ve never seen a 3-year-old beat on a drum set like little Bieber used to. He plays  a multitude of instruments, he’s witty and smart, and he does that cute little hair toss.

His story is such a great one, too. That meteoric rise to fame was powered almost exclusively by devoted fans and social media.

The kid’s got moxie.

I don’t know if I’ll learn all the words to his songs, but I definitely have a new respect for him.

That’s a good thing, I suppose, because Mary Claire is pretty convinced that he’ll be my son-in-law someday. And if she has an ounce of his tenacity, I might just believe her.

Does that make me a Be-lieber?

  1. Jennifer A says:

Not only does this kid have the smarts and moxie, he knows what has happened to the “great influencers” in his life. He knows that drugs were the ultimate demise of Michael Jackson and Elvis and (so far) says he is steering clear of that scene. This kid just may make it all the way…

I’ve been pretty skeptical about the whole Bieber thing myself, but I can’t deny the kid’s music is catchy! Glad you had fun at the movie. My 22-year-old sister has actually been talking about going . . . eek! Beliebers are everywhere!

  3. I pulled a Chris and stayed home with the oldest and youngest when Andrea took the other Beliebers in the family. Katelyn prefers Classical these days, and Truman prefers Death Metal.
